Our History

The story of Mount Zion Primary and Infant School begins in 1861, when the Presbyterian Church established this beacon of learning in the hills of St. James Parish. Founded during a pivotal time in Jamaica's educational development, the school emerged from the church's commitment to providing quality education to the children of the Mount Zion District and surrounding areas. The Presbyterian founders, who would later become the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, envisioned an institution that would serve as more than just a place of learning – it would be a cornerstone of community development and spiritual growth. Positioned strategically on a plateau overlooking the Rose Hall Developments and Jamaica's magnificent North Shore, Mount Zion Primary found its home in one of the island's most picturesque settings. This elevated location, approximately 46 kilometers east of Montego Bay, proved to be more than just scenic – it became symbolic of the school's aspirational motto, 'Onward, Upward.' The unique cul-de-sac setting provided a safe, nurturing environment where generations of students could focus on their studies while being inspired by the natural beauty that surrounded them. Throughout the decades, Mount Zion Primary has weathered the changes of time while maintaining its core commitment to educational excellence. The transition to a co-owned institution between the Ministry of Education and the United Church represents the school's ability to adapt and evolve while honoring its founding principles. This partnership has allowed the school to blend traditional values with modern educational approaches, creating a unique learning environment that serves students from Mount Zion, Cornwall, Palmyra, Rhyne Park, Lilliput, Spot Valley, and Barrett Town. In recent years, Mount Zion Primary has distinguished itself through remarkable achievements that reflect its innovative spirit and commitment to excellence. The school's success in the JCDC Music Festival showcases the creative talents nurtured within its walls, while the Edmund Bartlett East Central Constituency Awards for Most Improved and Top Small School recognition highlight the institution's academic progress. Perhaps most notably, the 2023 STEAM in Action Challenge National Agrarian Award for Innovation in hydroponics demonstrates how this historic school continues to embrace cutting-edge educational approaches. Today, Mount Zion Primary and Infant School stands as a testament to over 160 years of educational dedication. With more than 100 students currently enrolled and an active Parent Teacher Association supporting the school's mission, the institution continues to honor its heritage while preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century. Under the leadership of Principal Onex Bowen and Board Chair Rev. Egbert Harvey, Mount Zion Primary remains committed to its founding vision – nurturing young minds and spirits in an environment where every child can truly move 'Onward, Upward.'
